At the twenty-frst century dawned, the decline of certain cities which had flourished in the early twentieth century became impossible to ignore. The Rust Belt of the American Midwest was particularly grim. I took a projector into the dilapidated and abandoned old theaters and projected famous films from years past. Snow White, one of the most celebrated films from Disney’s early years, glowed brilliant white in the peopleless ruin. The world is already dotted with such portents of our own extinction.
